Study on lithium ion battery breakthrough more environmentally friendly

27th release of the European Commission said in a statement, EU-funded "blue lions" project researchers made breakthroughs in lithium battery research, which will help produce cheaper, safer and more environmentally friendly lithium batteries.

Study on lithium-ion battery breakthrough: more environmentally friendly

Compared with rechargeable batteries such as nickel-metal hydride batteries, lithium-ion batteries with shorter charging time, large storage capacity and other advantages, therefore, soon attracted the attention of electric vehicle manufacturer. However, lithium-ion batteries still some bugs need to be improved, such as short circuit, fire, etc. In addition, its cost is relatively expensive.

"Blue lions" project researchers developed more environmentally friendly battery materials and to reduce the use of chemicals. Its new results including: improved production process, using water material pulp production electrode, to reduced electrode production cost and pollution; launched new of Assembly process, as using laser cutting and high temperature pretreatment, technology, reduced production battery by needed of time and cost; development out automation module and battery assembly line, in improve output volume of while reduced cost; reduce battery module weight, makes of easy assembled also easy split solutions recycling. In addition, the modular design and the use of new materials also allows recyclers to safely recycle old battery materials, thereby reducing waste.

At present, the project researchers expanded the production scale, some partners of the pilot testing these innovation processes on the production line. Project partner Volkswagen, Seat and other automotive brands will also assess the final assembled lithium-ion battery modules, study its compliance with the technical requirements of the electric vehicle.
